The Turkish Lira as we know it today was created in 2005, knocking six zeroes off the Turkish Lira banknotes, taking them from millions to more manageable 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 lira notes in a clean sweep. It stayed stable between 2 to 3 Turkish lira to the Pound Sterling for 8 years, until around autumn 2013 when it started to devalue. At the time of publication, 1 pound is worth just under 60 lira. This trend, combined with big ups and downs in the cross-currency exchange rates compared with the Turkish Lira means that many Turkish people choose to play the currency markets to make money, and keep savings in foreign currency or precious metals. Gold is close to an alternative currency in Türkiye, and is traditionally given as a wedding gift because it's seen as a safe investment. In recent weeks silver has also attracted attention as it's gained exponentially in value worldwide.
The table below shows the values and trends for the last week from a Turkish investor's point of view.
